It's All About Me!

Leslie, Diann and I are all very happy for the opportunity to nurture, teach and get to know your special little ones. We had a great second week of school. Everyone is beginning to understand our routines, class expectations and friendships are forming.

This week we focused our studies on how we are alike and different, but also how we are special. We examined our eye color, discussed who was left or right handed. We graphed how many people are in each student's family. We offered numerous activities to reinforce name recognition and to help students know and remember the names of their classmates. We also worked on color recognition, sorting and one to one counting.

We sang songs and had silly dance contests.
We used dotters to denote each person in their family...some included furry friends in their count.
We had fun creating nature faces from play dough.

Students painted cardboard cylinders. We put their photos on them so they could incorporate them into their block play. It definitely added to their conversions and awareness of each other.
"Hey! That's me!" "There's Stanley!"

Beans were a hit in the sensory table.

The sweet face of success

Students were given a variety of materials to represent things about themselves that make them unique.
Some chose to use pasta for curly hair. For the most part it was a gluetopia of creativity.

We traced our shoes and used blocks to measure them
We used ink pads to make fingerprint marks around our names.

We practiced our cutting skills.

We practiced 1 to 1 counting
We had many opportunities for movement and song.
We examined our fingerprints using ink pads and a magnifying glass.

We created self portraits.

Students enjoyed water-coloring and watching their names appear beneath the colors
(prior to we had written their names in white crayon)

Discovering...friendship and the joy of books.
This week we read:
I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont
My Two Hands by Rick Walton
Mama Do You Love Me? by Barbara Joosse
