Healthy Smiles

Since February is National Children's Dental Health Month, we focused our studies how we keep our smiles healthy and white.

On Wednesday all WHP students enjoyed a special dental health program put on by a local dental group. With the help of colorful furry puppets, students learned the importance of brushing and flossing and we discussed which foods are healthy and unhealthy for their teeth.

We read Eat Your Veggies, Goldilocks by Steve Smallman and Tooth Trouble by Jane Clarke

* We painted with toothbrushes
* Used Legos, yarn and play dough to simulate how food gets stuck between their teeth and how to remove it with floss.
* Brushed away germs (brown crayon colored smiles)
* Created healthy and sad tooth collages by cutting out pictures from grocery ads
* We measured toothbrushes by using a variety of objects from Cheerios to unifix blocks

On Thursday we practiced our singing for the music program and continued our discussions on ways we keep our teeth healthy and strong.
* We sang songs like "Do you eat your vegetables?" (Do you know the muffin man? tune)
* We created a chart of animals that have teeth and those that don't
* We soaked hard boiled eggs in soda and made predictions about what would happen to the eggs. We talked about how eggs have a shell and our teeth have a sort of protective shell called enamel.
* We tried to brush the brown soda stains from the teeth and noticed that some brands of tooth paste performed better than others.
* Played a hippo smile counting game with dice and marshmallows

We washed babies and even brushed their teeth!
