Monsters, Mommies, and the letter M

Thank you for coming to our Mother's Tea on Thursday. It is always one of my favorite morning at Webster Hills. It is hard not to love a morning filled with so much excitement, hugs, and smiles!

 This week we also enjoyed monster fun!

Highlights of our learning time include:

  • creating monsters of our own with assorted art materials and journaling about these monsters
  • going on a monster hunt
  • moving like monsters- oh what fun we have stomping and growling in the Triangle Room!
  • singing songs and doing fingerplays about monsters
  • creating monster blob pictures with glitter glue and google eyes
  • graphing colorful monsters and interpreting our graph together
  • looking in magazines for items beginning with the letter M
  • creating room decorations and surprises for our Mother's Tea
Books we read together this week:

  • Where The Wild Things Are
  • The Monster At The End of This Book
  • There's A Monster In My House
  • Go Away Big Green Monster
  • Glad Monster, Sad Monster
  • Five Little Monsters
  • One Hungry Monster
  • There's No Such Thing As Monsters
  • There Was An Old Monster
  • What Mommies Do Best

Love this Playdoh monster that Landon and Emmett created!

James wanted his monster to have many eyes.

"I really like this!" says Annabelle.

"My monster has a handle!" says Izabella.

Hard at work searching for words that begin with the letter M.

Working on the paper chain for our Mother's Tea.

I love to see the creations the students come up with during free choice.

Watercolor is always a favorite.

Friends enjoying a good monster book together.

Love this smile!

The students worked so hard to create decorations for the Tea.

Our sensory table contained colorful paper and special scissors. On Wednesday we used these skills to create a large paper chain to hang as decoration for the Mother's Tea. Some of the students worked so hard on this, choosing to spend almost all of their free choice time creating the chain.

We enjoyed creating special jewelry for our Tea guests.

Earth Day in the Triangle Room

Dear Triangle Room Families,

First, it was our pleasure to have Miss Denise join us in the Triangle Room.  She is a great addition to our class, is enjoying getting to know the children and is already busily planning her week to teach!

   Our learning activities last week centered on Earth Day and taking care of the Earth.

We read the following books:

     * This is Our Earth
     * Earth Day
     * Why Should I Recycle?
     * The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle
     * Children of the Earth Remember
     * The Lorax
     * Junk Yard

   Our many Earth art activities included: hand print Earths, coffee filter Earths created with markers and water spray, marble-painting Earths, and  Q-tip painting!  The sensory table had sand and toy endangered animals.  We learned about the recycling symbol and practiced the 3 R's-- Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!  During choice time, the students could sort recycling materials,  fish in a polluted pond (catching litter along with their fish),
or make patterns with pictures of the Earth and the recycling symbol.

   On Thursday, we played Environmental BINGO!  We used plastic bottle caps to cover nature and recycling related pictures! We ended our day with singing "Happy Earth Day to you".

    The children also worked on a few sweet surprises (don't ask ðŸ˜Š!) for our Mother Appreciation Tea this Thursday!
We hope you will be able to join us on Thursday from 11:10-12:00!

mud & worms & clouds & rainbows

It was a great week in the Triangle Room! We enjoyed the sunshine and beautiful weather. We also had fun learning about more spring themes- robins, clouds, rainbows, and worms.

Books read together this week:

  • Mud!
  • A Mud Pie for Mother
  • Mrs. Wishy Washy
  • Rainbows
  • Worm Weather
  • Clouds
  • Little Cloud
  • The Rainy Day
  • A Nest Full of Eggs

Favorite activities this week:
  • After learning about the three types of clouds, students created clouds with a mixture of shaving cream and white paint. We compared our clouds in style to the illustrations done by Eric Carle in the book Little Cloud.
  • After reading Worm Weather, students painted "mud" (brown paint and oatmeal) thickly on to a piece of paper and added worms (rubber bands).
  • Students had the chance to play with water in the sensory table. They especially enjoyed pouring the water through colanders and from pitcher to pitcher.
  • We observed and held worms.
  • We created nests for robins after reading A Nest Full of Eggs. We used a variety of materials just as a robin would when building her nest.
  • After learning that rain occurs when a could is full of water, we enjoyed squeezing the water out of cotton ball clouds with tongs. (Great for strengthening our fine motor skills and lots of fun too!
  • We had a shared writing chart of our observations about worms.
  • We continued to enjoy a market in our dramatic play area.
  • We learned all about airplanes in science class.

  • We charted together words that start with W and practiced making the letter W in the air.
  • Students created rainbow mini books.
  • We all enjoyed a puddle flannel board rhyme that helped us to practice counting backwards.
  • We stamped our names with ink and alphabet stamps.
