Fall Changes/Special Person Day

On Tuesday we focused our studies on changes we experience during the Fall season -- from activities we enjoy (playing in the leaves and apple-picking) to the dip in temperatures and how we stay warm by wearing extra layers of clothing. We read Bella's Fall Coat and Weather in the Fall. We talked about cold and flu season and the importance of covering our coughs and sneezes. We enjoyed practicing sneezing into our elbows with the help of Jim Gill's silly sneezing song. For a craft we used a variety of craft materials to decorate a zebra coloring sheet. We talked about the letter Z. Attached to each child's board was a working zipper to engage them in practicing how to zip. In the afternoon we dipped large seed pods and acorns into paint to create interesting shapes on our papers.

On Wednesday the children enjoyed showing their special guests around our classroom for Special Person Day. During circle time we read, Those Darn Squirrels, listened to a flannel board rhyme about five little squirrels and pretended to be squirrels with a movement activity called Brown Squirrel, Brown Squirrel. We shared a journal activity with our special guests -- each student was asked to draw a picture of something they like to do with their special person.

On Thursday we talked about how Fall changes in weather affect animals -- while some grow thicker coats others must go to a warmer place during the cold weather months. During circle we read Animals in the Fall and did an activity that had students matching up activities with the proper season. For a craft activity we practiced our scissor skills by cutting out an acorn shape and then decorating it with tissue squares and crayons. In the afternoon we listened to the story, I Love My Hat, we used markers to color on leaf-shaped coffee filters and watched how the water absorbed into the paper.

Learning to cut with scissors is not easy - but the students did a great job staying focused
